UPDATED WITH FINAL NUMBERS CBS News and Knowledge Networks conducted a nationally representative poll of approximately 500 uncommitted voters reacting to the debate in the minutes after it happened.

Thirty-nine percent of uncommitted voters who watched the debate tonight thought Barack Obama was the winner. Twenty-four percent thought John McCain won. Thirty-seven percent saw it as a draw.

Forty-six percent of uncommitted voters said their opinion of Obama got better tonight. Thirty-two percent said their opinion of McCain got better.

Sixty-six percent of uncommitted voters think Obama would make the right decisions about the economy. Forty-two percent think McCain would.

Forty-eight percent of these voters think Obama would make the right decisions about Iraq. Fifty-six percent think McCain would.

We will have a full report on the poll later on. Uncommitted voters are those who don’t yet know who they will vote for, or who have chosen a candidate but may still change their minds.

The margin of sampling error could be plus or minus 4 percentage points for results based on the entire sample.

Guess who decided to Opt-Out of the Post Debate Discussion. Her name rhymes with ‘Sailin’ -

From ABC:

But there was a difference: Democrat Joe Biden made the round of post-debate television shows. NBC and CNN said they invited McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has granted only three interviews since joining the ticket a month ago, but she declined.

From CBS on Thursday (the day before the debate on enthusiasm):

Interest in tomorrow’s scheduled first presidential debate is high. Sixty-four percent of registered voters say they are “very likely” to watch the debate, which McCain has proposed delaying so that the candidates can focus on the financial crisis. Obama has said the debate should go on as planned. Less than one in ten registered voters say they are not likely to watch the debate.

By extension, this means we’ll probably see some high ratings for this first debate.

  1. So, where exactly was the Republican Vice Presidential candidate during and after the first Presidential debate? Well, in a bar! That is correct, she was at Philadelphia’s Irish Pub during the debate! I guess the McCain camp wanted to keep her as far away from any discussion about the debate as they could, so they figured a bar would be the best place to hide her. I don’t believe any other VP candidate has ever been absent from the post discussion rounds of a Presidential debate in history, has there? nope! But can you blame the McCain camp for trying to keep her as far away from any discussion forum?
Imagine, the Republicans believe that this Palin person is so qualified that they have to hide her from even the customary post-debate discussions, yet they would trust her to step in at a moment’s notice as President? Well of perhaps as president of the cracker factory, but of the United States of America?
    McCain/Palin?Thanks But No Thanks!!

  2. McCain is so desperate to win the presidency that he will say or do anything that he believes will help his chances. He’s 72 years old, (oldest candidate to ever run) this is his “last chance” in his political career, after this he will be too old to run again for the presidency and his senatorial career will also be coming to an end. This is his last gasp, his “battle of the bulge.” He is so desperate to win, that you can smell it on him. Desperation has a pungent odor!
